A week ago I went out to feed the animals and saw the largest King snake in barn. He didn't seem to mind my presence and nor did I his. We basically ignored each other as I went about my task.
Later in the day, I again went to do the evening feeding and sure enough, there was that snake. But this time he came closer to me as I fed the goats. So I poured a little milk in a jar cap and set it down a few inches from him. He coiled around his milk and drank all of it. Then he moved a couple of feet away and I refilled it for him. This has become a normal everyday thing and I have named him King. Now when I go into the barn, King comes out and crawls across my feet several times before coiling up in front of me, waiting for his milk. King is a good snake and is a protector of the other animals. If I sit down in the barn, King will get in my lap and take a nap. The other animals don't seem to have any fear of King.
One day I went to feed the chickens and found King eating a very large rat snake that was after the chickens. It was six weeks after eating the rat snake before King came back to drink his milk. He will now snuggle up with my German shepherd from time to time. King is now truly one of my farm animals and one of my favorites. DH
