A syllable is a unit of pronunciation uttered without interruption forming a whole or a part of a world and usually having one vowel or diphthong sound optionally surrounded by a consonant one or more consonants.
A word may contain one syllable.It is called a monosyllabic word.
A disyllabic word contains two syllables.
A polysyllabic word contains more than two syllables.
Examples of monosyllabic words:
cat,book,tree,have,work,find,fruit,hour
Examples of disyllabic words:
very,donkey,travel,noisy,English,fashion
Examples of polysyllabic words:
intelligent,computer,beautiful,television
Note: The sounds /l/ and /n/ when they are final are considered as a syllable.
