Looking into the life of Albert Camus is a real challenge. This “Frenchman from Algeria”, as he used to describe himself, remains unclassifiable.
A sun lover, born in poverty, he was a novelist, a playwright, a theatre director, an actor, an essayist and a journalist
.
He was no doubt an intellectual committed to fighting against all forms of totalitarianism.
He had a passion for the truth, in sharp contrast with the hypocritical blindness of some of his contemporaries.
History proved him right, whether in regard to Soviet camps or the Algerian problem. He boldly denounced extremism and nihilism,
but “never lost the sense of balance, whatever political storms surrounded him”.

He had a rich personality and a free mind.
Camus was a charmer and yet a touchy man, doubting and yet arrogant. He wanted to be loved and often managed to,
he wanted to be understood but was not always. He was too concerned about happiness to be really happy.
He was a solitary man. But he was deeply attached to his native land, Algeria.
He was born on 7 November 1913, in Mondovi (Dréan), near Bône (Annaba) in Algeria.
He was the second son of Lucien Camus, who worked in a wine-growing estate, and his mother, Catherine,
was of Spanish origin. His father died in 1914 in the battle of the Marne.
His widow moved to Algiers and had to work as a cleaning woman to provide for her sons.

A child of Algeria
In 1924, Albert Camus went to Algers’main high school, which was located in Bab-el-Oued, at the other end of the town.
When going three by tram, the child marveled at the sight of Algiers bay.
It was the beginning of a love story that greatly influenced the future writer.

1931 was an important year. When preparing for the entrance exam to the Ecole Normale Supérieure d’Alger, the teenager met the philosopher,
Jean Grenier, who had a strong influence on him. Albert Camus first essays were published in the Sud magazine.
In 1935, he joined the Communist Party, which he left two years later. After completing a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, it was discovered that he had tuberculosis.
He had to give up the idea of becoming a teacher.

At an early age, he was struck by the inequalities between Europeans and “natives” – the Muslims. He considered that intifascism, anti-imperialism and colonisialism were one.
As he could not become a teacher, Albert Camus had to find other means of support.
He met Pascal Pia, who was starting a new daily newspaper, the “Alger Republicain”.
Thus, Camus started as a journalist in 1938.

Debuts in journalism

Pia had revolutionary ideas on Algeria, which pleased the young man.
He considered that you cannot forever hold sway over a people in their own land, that salaries for the same work should be the same for a European and a Arab, that local children were entitled to schooling and their parents to social benefits.
Camus went from the “news in brief” column to editorials, book reviews and reporting.
The Alger Républicain was his school of journalism. Reporting gave him a sens of the concerte, and dislike for abstruse wording

He started writing several books and completed two, the two sides of the coin and nuptials.
The main themes of his maturity – death, the medterranean, isolation, man’s destiny – can already by found in the two sides of coin, a series of essays on literature.
Camus already knew how to set the scene and was good at characterization. Hisphilosophical studies were useful: he looked for the meaning behind facts. His articles irritated.
The Gouvernement Général found his style unbearable especially his survey on Kabylia, published in 1939, in which he denounced colonial oppression.
He was banned from writing in Algier’s newspapers.

Camus at «combat».

In 1940, heexiled himself to paris. Pascal Pia helped him find a job at the paris- soir daily newspaper, but he did not stay long because it represented everything camus loathed, placing sensationalism before information and analysis. He married Francine Faure in December 1940.
They had two children, catherine and jean.
In 1941, true to his convictions-fighting all forms of totalitarianism.
Albert Camus joined the résistance and became the true soul of the clandestine "combat" newspaper between 21 Augst 1944 and 3 june 1947, he asserted himself as a chief editor and editorialist.
He managed to perform both activities of writer and journalist at the same time.
In 1942, he burst onto the the literature scene with The Stranger, on of his major works.
It tells the story of Meursault, an anti-hero of the absurd, in an indifferent- "blank writing".
Meursault murdered an arab on a beach, but he is sentenced to death not for murder but because of his indifference, having not cried at his mother’s funeral.
The Myth of Sisyphus was published the same yearand is The Stranger's philosophical counterpart.
Itis an analysis of the absurdity of the situation of man, who is condemned, like Sisyphus, to roll a boulder up to the top of a mountain every day to see it roll down again
