Methods of TEFL you need to show them the negative of the GTM (Grammar Translation Method) firstly then introduce to them the other two most important methods showing them the positives and the negatives too.......after your expalantion just like what I do herein this topic tell them to Mix the methods to get a good benificial process in teaching english as a foreign ********. I think that you should understand the methods first when you understand them you will be able to know what to do. of course we know that there are three methods of teaching english as a foreign ******** each one has advantages and disadvantages too follow me: 1-The grammar Translation Method Traditional method it's first used in teaching Classical lang and Greek Latin A_purposes: -Help to read foreign ******** literature -Learners would become familiar with the target ******** -GTM did not prepare people to use Target ******** B_Method: -Reading passage -Translation -Different words translation into L1 -Memorise 20 words and use them into sentences C_Principals: read Foreign ******** literature and fine arts ability to communicate is not the goal of Foreign ******** The goal of GTM is Translation Reading+Writing but not Speaking+ Listening Learners should be conscious of Grammar D_Disatvantages: -It is not effective in preparing learners to be communicative 2-The Direct Method A_purposes: -How to use Foreign ******** to communicate -No translation -It is called the direct method because ofthe direct process B_Method: -Conversation practice -Dictation, paragraph writing -Filling the gaps C_Principals: -Reading in thetarget ******** (TL) should be taugh from begining -Objects should be used to help learning -Student should be learnt to think in TL -It's purpose is communicative -Pronnunciation -Self correction -Speak as possible -Conscious about native speakers live!!! D_Disatvantages: -Dependent on teachers rather than books -Nativist Fluency 3-The Audio lingual Method: There is two views on this method "structuralism & Behaviorism" If you want me to show them Tell me I will do. During WW II__ Military purposes A_Principals: -Teacher introduces a new dialogue -******** forms occur most naturally withing context -Teacher use only Tl (target ********) -Teacher repeat each time -Students repeat each time -Teachers correct mispronunciation -******** learnign is a process of habit formation -Avoiding making errors and correcting them -Teacher should be like an "Orchestra Leader" -Major objective of ******** teaching is acquiring stuctural patterns -Students are not given Grammatical rules but learnt from examples. -******** can't be separated from culture. B_Classroom Application(method) 1_ Dialogues (everyday expressions) Dialogues are learnt by mimicry-Memorisation Students learn dialogues by heart oen by one 2_ Acting out (by strudents) |
