Well,just count the number of the pronounced vowels.It is the number of the syllables

Examples

In the word "can" there is one pronounced vowel.So,there is one syllable

In the word "book" there are two pronounced vowels but they are pronounced as one vowel sound.So,there is one syllable,too

In the word "fine" there are two vowels but the last vowel "e" is not pronounced.So,there is one syllable

In the word "very" there are two pronounced vowels.So,there are two syllables

There is a rules that states that the letter " L " and the letter "N" at the end of the word after a consonant sound are considered

It's correct but the meaning isn't the same

When we say: As he was cutting the chicken,they were looking at him strangely, It means all the time

he was cutting the chicken,they were looking at him like that

But when we say: As he was cutting the chicken,they looked at him strangely,we mean that they looked

at him strangely just in one moment from the period he spent in cutting the chicken

Do you see what I mean?
