افتراضي My book will not be a "how to" book. It is a "what" book.

I talk about those things that must be mastered or strongly considered before you ever write your first word. It is more structured toward novelists vice a short story. Knowing how to structure sentences into meaningful paragraphs is one of those skills. Whether you polish what you have or write all 3K words doesn't matter, I suppose.

But I will advise that you work on it until it shines. Take this opportunity to learn some of the fundamentals of the craft. And if your intention is to write a short story, then you should research its characteristics. A story of 3K words does not necessarily constitute a short story of traditional standards.

افتراضي Hi, can you please critique this sample I wrote?*

The suffocating room is shrouded in a dreary ambiance emitted by a bare lamp resting on the plush carpet. The walls are concealed by piles of paintings, completed and incomplete, towering up to the ceiling. Every available space on the tables and chairs is consumed, leaving no room to sit.

“Hey Sal, would you like to take a seat? I don't have much, but I'd like to show some courtesy.” With hands that bear the marks of time, Doug firmly adjusts his glasses on his face. The wrinkles on his skin are dry and visible, a testament to his many years.

Sal glances around the busy room and realizes finding a seat might be tough. She wants to make sure Doug doesn't get upset, so she keeps her cool and nonchalantly adjusts the strap of her purse as if it slipped. “Thank you, Doug. I appreciate that, but I'm good standing.”

“Alright, suit yourself. I know this place is a bit cluttered. I've been meaning to clean up, but I've been busy lately.” Doug peers downwards, his chin almost touching his chest while his glasses precariously slide down his nose.

“No worries, Doug. I understand. It's your space, and you can keep it how you like.”

With a sense of relief, Doug gazes upwards, free from the weight of judgment. A bright smile crosses his face, revealing his unnaturally gleaming dentures. “Thanks for understanding. Speaking of this space, I'm actually trying to sell one of my paintings to help with rent this month. Would you like to take a look?”

“Sure, I'd love to see it.”

“Great, let me show you around the room. It's a bit of a mess, but I hope you'll find something you like.”

“Of course, Doug. I'm sure it'll be beautiful.”

افتراضي So I’m back to my original worry that made me spiral into health anxiety TW brain tumour

I can’t shake this feeling I have one. I feel like I know exactly where it is, in the top left of my head. I feel like all my anxiety has manifested and created one as stupid as that sounds.

My symptoms are:

Dull pain / sometimes stinging in the top left back of my head which can go all the way along to the front of my head.

Very clumsy, more than usual.

Switching words, like I’ll accidentally say “going to make a sandwich” instead of a tea, but I do it all the time.

Painful head rushes whenever I stand up.

Weird vision. I have trouble focusing on things

And the main one is just a really weird sensation. Like I just feel extremely weird, I can’t explain it.

Please If someone can relate let me know, I honestly am convinced I have a tumour and that I’m dying. I hate being like this.

افتراضي How do you plan a celebration?

answer
Find a venue that restricts the number of folks you can have. We picked a beach house and there was a very strict fire code so we could only have 50 people max. There were some people who threw a fit, but most understood. Do as much yourself,

Pinterest will be your best friend.

We held ours at our house (only 40 people) and self-catered from Costco for appetizers and cake. The sheet cake was good but hideously ugly.

افتراضي If you are experiencing this, how are you adjusting?

Are you finding more and more businesses are charging you a 4% transaction fee for using a card (any kind, credit or debit), which makes a 2% cash back card kind of… Only just deferring half the charge cost? In NJ all small businesses do this, all gas stations charge you more for a card, and now some larger businesses are doing it as well.

If you are experiencing this, how are you adjusting? Giving up and doing more cash transactions? Switching to a more beneficial card so the transaction fee is outweighed by the card benefits?

ANSWER1
Cashback is near worthless to me, I made $1350 during my recent vacation thanks to sign up bonuses. In my area, gas stations don't charge more, I had actually never even heard if it until I started traveling. I saw a .30/gal difference for cash vs card recently.

ANSWER2
We stopped at a resturant while traveling in North Carolina. No signs posted -nothing on menu -they charged us 3.99% for using our credit card. Would never go there again even if we had liked the food.

افتراضي From Bankrupt and in debt to debt free and a net with over a Million

Here’s my story:
It’s a strange feeling to pay off the mortgage then not tell anyone. I don’t want to go blasting it on my page and I don’t want to call friends and family to tell them and my husband feels the same way. Is that strange? I worry that I will sound like I’m bragging or boasting. But I want to yell from the rooftops. We are FREE! And we are Millionaires!!!

We started our FI journey without calling it that in 2005, not long after we got married. I had a son from a previous relationship and had already filed bankruptcy 3 years before meeting my now husband of 18 years. I had hit rock bottom financially, living on welfare, food stamps and section 8 housing. My car was repossessed and I felt like I was drowning. I thank God that my brother was able to help get me back on my feet, I was able to get a good job and get off all of the government assistance.

I met my husband in 2003 and we had a whirlwind romance and were married in 2004. He came with $50k student loan debt and was starting up his own web development business, living off savings and credit cards. It was tight. We lived very modestly in a rental in the country and scrimped and saved and worked hard. We both had car payments and credit card debt and it seemed to always be a dark financial cloud over us. So we decided to find a way to pay off the debts.

We started out selling things we did not need around the house on EBay. We also decided to split our income, everything I made would go straight to debt and everything he made would cover our living expenses. We started out small, going on a “spending freeze”, meaning no eating out, no movies, no extra spending whatsoever. Once we accomplished paying off that item, we would celebrate with a treat! Then back on the spending freeze again. After 1 year of doing this we did it! We were debt free! No car payments, no credit card debt, no student loan debt!!!

By this time, I was pregnant and we decided to buy our first home. True to our frugal nature, we bought a foreclosed house on the courthouse steps for $1 over the banks asking. We walked away with our first mortgage and instant equity. It was such a great feeling until we realized we were back in debt again. But this was “good” debt. An investment. Because we were debt free, I was able to stay home with our son and start a small eBay business. My first leap into entrepreneurship!

After 5 years we decided to sell and move to a be closer to my mother who’s health was deteriorating and to be in a better school district for our son as he was about to start public school. Sold the house and made a $20k profit. We were once again 100% debt free so we decided to rent and enjoy being debt free.

Life was good at the beach. But we were still missing something. I felt like we were just throwing money down the drain renting (which we were). During this time period I started a new business and my husband’s web business was doing well. We were comfortable and our son was settled into school, now in 4th grade. But on Memorial Day, I got a text from our landlord, she wanted us out of the house so she could have the house available for her family. I was devistated. Finding another rental in the summer was virtually impossible in this beach community. We did not want to move schools. So we decided to look at buying. It was hard for my husband to even consider going back into debt but we knew that buying would be a smart investment. So we did.

We found a beautiful beach house with a pool and ocean view! It was our dream house! It needed work and had been on a vacation rental program for 10 years (which would later prove to be a huge plus). We ended up getting it $40k under asking!!! Once again, instant equity.

Fast forward a few years. By this time both of our businesses were thriving so we had started investing, maxing our our IRAs, maxing our our HSAs, investing in stocks and saving for retirement, making extra payments on our mortgage. Financially we were good.

But we still were not happy. My mom and his dad passed away within 6 month of each other. It was crippling. We also had a miscarriage right after my mom passed away. We both were working too much and it just seemed like we were not “Living” life. We were depressed but we knew that life is short so we better get to living it. So we made the decision to do something absolutely off the wall crazy and rent our house during the summer for 10 weeks on VRBO. We would take that money and travel to exotic places.

First summer COVID hit but we still remained booked so we moved into a 10 week rental in Key West for the summer. Absolutely epic! Cannot wait to go back.

Second summer we took a cross country road trip in an RV which we ended up putting my company logo on it and made it into a cross country advertising blitz!* Another absolutely Epic summer.

Now we are in our 3rd summer and ironically we are back in the original rental that we were in before we bought our house, 1 mile up the road. funny how life works.

We made the decision last year that we were going to pay off the house. As we started discussing our grand travel adventures we decided to stay close to home this summer and use the money from the rental season to help us to pay off the house.

3 days ago, we did it! We wired the funds and now our mortgage is $0!!!

We bought our house in 2016 for $390,000. Before the huge housing bubble our home was valued on Zillow at $550,000 and now it’s up to almost $800,000!!! With our investments and savings, our net worth is over a million. I never in a million years thought I would EVER say we are Millionaires!!!!

I cried. I remembered the day I went to court to file my bankruptcy papers like it was yesterday. I remembered living off Vienna sausages and Ramen. I remembered that feeling of drowning in collection bills. And now it hits me, FREEDOM!!!

We still have a ways to go to get our retirement nest egg where we need it but this was a huge step towards that.

Italy 🇮🇹, here we come!

I’m hoping that my story can inspire others that It IS possible!

افتراضي Need some advice for my side-hustle startup idea

I’m a junior in college studying Finance. I’d like to start a little “Social Media Management” business here in my college town. I think there are some small businesses here (especially some of the bars) that could really benefit from having a college student manage their social media and advertising. I’m pretty knowledgeable about all the major social media networks, and I’ve even been working on building my own website/blog recently.

1) how do I reach out to these small businesses and convince them that I would be an asset for their team? I’m not sure some business owners would find a lot of credibility in a freelance college student

2) how do I charge them if they do decide to hire me? I don’t think I should charge hourly because I’m a pretty fast worker. Should I charge a weekly/monthly amount?

3) do you think I need more education on the topic? Where would you suggest I learn more?

Any experts in this field?

افتراضي Some of you are way beyond "frugal" and are in crisis

*I apologize for the terrible grammar! I was in a conference call last night and I read a couple of posts that sounded emergent.*

Man. Some of you are way beyond "frugal" and are in crisis...

...I'm going to be honest, I dang near died with my one "true" bout with poverty. I've never had enough, but that period was really bad and I'd never been "there" before. I was prepped to work jobS and buckle down and blah blah blah. No one prepared me for what happens when all of that fails and there isn't a 2nd income to fall back on. (Thank you great recession.)

I had no idea where to go or what to do. I just didn't eat unless someone got worried and fed me, there wasn't anywhere to cut back except food.

Luckily I caught a small break and I went to work for HUD, the residents and clients taught me a TON of cool tricks while I scratched and clawed my way back up.

If you are not eating!!!! (alarm bells should be going off here) your job from here out is to keep as much money in your pocket as you can. Kay? That's it. Keep your money in your pocket.

You'll need money for things you can't barter for or get elsewhere, like meds or a utility bill or...

...it's not like the universe won't throw something at you just to keep it interesting.

But how do you do that?? Especially today when it costs $1700.00 just to blink?!

*Food comes from WIC or the food banks. Don't pay a dime. If your food bank is like ours, it deals to churches and then the churches hand out. Call your housing office or something like a community center to see if they have the list of churches and whatnot that run pantries. (they're not that scary... just call)

*Then since you already have the churches on the phone, see what funding and clothes closets you can tap. Sometimes they can even help with a minor repair or a gas card or rent assistance so you can keep that money in your pocket as well.

*Your state should have something like 211. Call and see what services are available. They'll send a packet in the mail for you to fill out. There's no first come first serve, you just wait for the paperwork in the mail and send it back with documentation of your income and assets. When they're done with your paperwork, they put you on what they can (usually medical, dental, food, and vision) and then they put you on waitlists or point you to waitlists for the rest. (Except housing, each area has their own entity so that'll all be handled locally.)

*15 year olds can work, they won't die, most of us survived it anyway - tell them to enjoy pre-15 because birthday's are coming up and if they want the **** kicks or the fancy butt jeans they need to earn it. Most parents won't take their kids' money, but the money they earn is less you have to come up with.

*Get on fb and search for local freebie sites. See who is giving away what. You may not need it, but can you buy it cheap, fix it up, and turn it for a small profit? Don't knock an extra $7, if you do that 4 times, you have a decent fruit and veggie haul. Fruits and veggies keep the doctors away.

You have a little grocery money now, plus the food bank donation. All that did was refill the pantry though. You still need to work a few things -

*Meat is for weekends. Weekdays are pastas, salads, bean soups, buddah bowls, oats, sandwiches, grains, etc. You don't need dairy either. A little butter here or there is whatever, but $9 eggs and $15 butter and $87 coffee creamer is pointless if it's half your food budget. Give it up til things even out, your stomach and blood pressure will thank you. Do these two things and you'll slice your grocery bill in half. That's more money.

And you're probably thinking, "I have food now...

...calm down."

But do you have a spare tire or a broken wrist?? Do you have a vet bill? Dentist? With your face all throbbing and you want to throw up from pain?

Get a couple hundred in savings before anything else. Emergencies happen to people that don't have any money.

It gets easier after:

*This is where you get some of your life back without going crazy.

*You need internet, get the cheapest package - you need to pay bills, kids need to upload homework, downtime comes to EVERY income bracket, it's okay to stream. Netflix police are not going to bang the door down.

*Before you do that though, call around your city govt offices, lots of places have grants in place to offer broadband to school aged kids. Not even a discount - FREE.

*Just remember you don't need 18 streaming packages.

Two at a time are fine. When you've burned them out, cut them and add 2 more. Rotate packages.

Don't stray from your job. Keep your money in your pocket. Don't get lax.

If you have a student in the family with a student email address, tap every student discount you can. Internet, phone, streaming package, etc. You're going to have them anyway, get them at a discount. Save that money for something else.

You have get out of crisis mode first. You have to.

You can't stay there, it's not healthy. One bad day is going to tank you and then you're really in trouble. You need to hustle and get help before the bad day comes so it's only a minor annoyance when it shows up.

Start with phone calls.

We're all a tad grumpy, we don't make enough, it's 400 people to us, and there aren't enough hours in the day - but we've been here. It's why we do the jobs we do. We're in a good spot and we're bringing people out of the hole with us. ❤

just. call.

افتراضي Currently on a Frontier flight

I don’t fly them very often but sometimes for a quick trip you have to. They’ve always been pretty decent in my opinion. I always just bring a backpack and stick it under my seat.

They’ve been pretty lenient about it. As long as it’s not an unreasonable sized bag, they let it in a personal item. This trip, I noticed them making almost every person check it in the little sized container at the gate.

They also were telling people they can’t force it in, it has to slide in easily. I literally have purses that probably wouldn’t fit in the container. Thought it was way too intense, so I reached out to someone I know that works there.

Turns out Frontier initiated a new policy a few months ago. For every bag they catch at the gate, the gate agent makes $10.

I think it’s absolutely ridiculous and tacky, but at least now I know to prepare. I just thought I would share and warn everyone for the future.

افتراضي Should I make a down payment for a house instead of going into renting next year?

Hello everybody!! I want to see if somebody has something to give in this dilemma I have going on right now. As background, I’m 20 years old and making around $3,500 monthly (I work as a server so it fluctuates). I live by myself and pay for all my stuff (my family is in/from Colombia). I’m also trying to find a better paying job at the moment, but hasn’t yet happened. I have a personal loan of $4,500 and a car loan of around $20,000. For this year I’m living rent-free at a friend’s house until December for sure with a chance of a little more time, and will be starting school in the middle of this year, hoping to find lots of scholarships but still counting on having to pay around $3-4k per semester. However, whenever I get out of the house at the end of the year I need to figure out what to do about housing.

My girlfriend and I have been together for around two years, and have come to an agreement of handling our finances together until we can settle down, finish our career and then get married (not because of not wanting to, but because of the costs and family approval). Her income is around $1,400 , bringing it down to combined $4,900. However, she’s also looking for a better job since she already has a College degree.

My actual concern is, counting on paying the personal loan in the next two or three months, paying school cash if necessary, paying a good amount on my car (with around $12,000 left to pay), and saving some money (around $1,200 at the moment) for whatever we have to figure out with housing, should I make a down payment for a house instead of going into renting next year? I understand we should technically pay off my car first according to Baby Steps, but we would rather paying off our own house instead of paying rent that doesn’t take us anywhere on the long run.

Thank you so much for the advice in advance.

افتراضي Time for some more professional advice… this time about car insurance

I have seen a bunch of posts lately about lowering car insurance costs and that’s great.

But one part of your policy that you really gotta watch is “property damage liability”

Raising this coverage doesn’t cost very much and oftentimes lower coverage policies will have this around state minimums, often under $20,000.

Folks this is the amount that YOUR policy will pay out for property damage that YOU cause.

If you have $15,000 or $20,000 in property damage liability and you take out someone’s brand new BMW and your policy only covers $15-20k… take a guess at what’s going to end up happening to you.* Their underinsured coverage is gonna kick in and their insurance company in most states is going to then come after you for their loss.

Don’t be foolish. Saving money is great, being underinsured isn’t.

Edited to add: I would have $100,000 coverage if I were you.

Disclaimer: I’m a long time car dealer and we’ve dealt with the aftermath of underinsured accidents. It can get ugly.
