A man was pulled over for driving too fast, even though he thought he was driving just fine.

Officer: You were speeding.
Man: No, I wasn't.
Officer: Yes, you were. I'm giving you a ticket.
Man: But I wasn't speeding.
Officer: Tell that to the judge! (The officer gives man the ticket.)
Man: Would I get another ticket if I called you a jerk?
Officer: Yes, you would.
Man: What if I just thought that you were?
Officer: I can't give you a ticket for what you think.
Man: Fine, I think you're a jerk!

The Difference between Past and Present Conceptions of Accelerated Learning

Who are the types of students historically associated with accelerated learning?

Previously, the two types of students associated with accelerated learning were the two “extremes". Although they come from opposite ends of the achievement scale, gifted and remedial students share the common factor that they have a longer history of being given the chance to accelerate their learning skills through a speedier type of educational course. The students who were considered gifted historically skipped grades and/or were encouraged to progress through standard course material at a much faster rate. In these ways, both of these types of students were considered part of an “accelerated" program, by virtue of either their need for acceleration or their ability to handle it.

Furthermore, ever-increasing numbers of students who are considered low achieving or remedial in their abilities were offered the chance to accelerate their learning by being granted access to educators who were able to help them focus on learning strategies that would make it easier for them to engage with the course material. By making the material more accessible, they made it possible for students to achieve degrees of academic success of which they were previously thought incapable, simply because the curriculum was not previously geared to their needs.

Who are the types of students currently associated with accelerated learning?

Now, accelerated learning is considered a viable option for students at all levels of achievement. It has become a concern that students at all levels of ability have the opportunity to find their course material engaging, challenging and applicable to a variety of fields in life. The belief is that accelerated learning can be used to prepare students for greater life challenges later on by teaching them to adapt to various situations and applying their knowledge about their own individual learning styles to help them better face challenges and solve problems they encounter in the academic and work worlds.

What sorts of classrooms are traditionally associated with accelerated learning?

Previously, students who engaged in accelerated learning programs were usually isolated in individual classrooms to make it possible for them to focus better on the specialized curriculum that had been prepared for them. The classrooms were set apart from the “regular" classrooms and it was impossible for the “Regular" students to be unaware of their existence, or of the “differences" of the students who attended those classrooms. They were also set apart by the different teaching styles; an excess of expectation places on the advanced students, and an abundance of teachers and a variety of teacher's aides so that educators could assist with the remedial students.

What sorts of classrooms are currently associated with accelerated learning?

Nowadays, just about any classroom may be turned into a classroom ideal for an accelerated learning program.

With such a wide variety of students engaging in the process, it has become increasingly necessary to spread the learning process out between varieties of classes. Sometimes the accelerated learning classes may be conducted outside, in the case of science and athletic classes. Sometimes the accelerated learning classes may be conducted in theatres or in music classrooms that allow children to expand their dramatic, musical and physical talents. At other times, the classes may be conducted in a more traditional classroom setting, perhaps at desks or perhaps at tables in small groups; certainly there is no “isolation" from the “regular" students in these modern day accelerated learning classrooms. They focus instead on including all students and making them feel part of a larger group simply by virtue of the all-inclusive nature of the lessons taught and the style in which the classes are conducted.

Latest Inventions

Gyro Technology

This wild new motorcycle, invented by 19-year-old Ben J. Poss Gulak, is among the latest inventions to capture attention. Debuting at the National Motorcycle Show in Toronto, the "Uno" uses gyro technology for balance and acceleration.
It is a battery charged machine that accelerates by leaning forward and slowing down by leaning backwards. It weighs approximately 129 pounds (58 kg.) and has a top speed of 25 mph (40 klms).
Update: Since featuring Ben's invention, he has continued to develop and progress with his innovative product. He won second place in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, and first prize in Popular Science's Invention Awards.
Ben also appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and on the popular invention television show "Dragon's Den" where he received 1.25 million dollars from investors.
Gulak continues to develop and commercialize his invention while studying engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The latest prototype, known as the Uno 3, can automatically transform itself from a uno-dicycle into a conventional looking motorcycle, which allows for greater acceleration, speed and stability.
Ben shares this advice for inventors, "When you have an idea, it's easy to get discouraged. There are so many people who will tell you that you're wasting your time. The biggest thing is to not let people get you down. If you really believe in something - keep going after it because there is always a way and you can make your dreams come true."

Jet Man

Inventor and former Swiss Air Force fighter pilot, Yves Rossy, jumped from a plane over Calais, France and flew 200 mph crossing the English Channel in 13 minutes before landing in Dover, England. Earlier this year he unfolded the wings on his back and flew 186 mph (300 kilometers) above the Swiss Alps.
Using four small jet engines attached to his carbon wings, he climbed at 200 ft per minute before executing a series of stunts for a crowd of reporters watching from a mountain top.
The spectacular demonstration was the first public revelation of his latest invention, which he spent five years developing.
"It is absolute freedom" says Rossy.
The inventor says his 120 lb Jetman suit will eventually be available to the public but it's still a few years away.
The flight over the English Channel was his second public demonstration. He is planning his next flight through the Grand Canyon.
Update: Yves Rossy has completed his flight over the Grand Canyon. He jumped out of a helicopter at 2,440 metres (8,000 feet) and soared over the Canyon at 330 km (205 mph) for eight minutes before deploying his parachute.
"My first flight in the US is sure to be one of the most memorable experiences in my life, not only for the sheer beauty of the Grand Canyon but the honor to fly in sacred Native American lands," said Rossy.

Historical figures

One of the greatest military leaders in history and emperor of France, he conquered much of Europe.
Napoleon Bonaparte was born on 15 August 1769 in Corsica into a gentry family. Educated at military school, he was rapidly promoted and in 1796, was made commander of the French army in Italy, where he forced Austria and its allies to make peace. In 1798, Napoleon conquered Ottoman-ruled Egypt in an attempt to strike at British trade routes with India. He was stranded when his fleet was destroyed by the British at the Battle of the Nile.
France now faced a new coalition - Austria and Russia had allied with Britain. Napoleon returned to Paris where the government was in crisis. In a coup d'etat in November 1799, Napoleon became first consul. In 1802, he was made consul for life and two years later, emperor. He oversaw the centralisation of government, the creation of the Bank of France, the reinstatement of Roman Catholicism as the state religion and law reform with the Code Napoleon.
In 1800, he defeated the Austrians at Marengo. He then negotiated a general European peace which established French power on the continent. In 1803, Britain resumed war with France, later joined by Russia and Austria. Britain inflicted a naval defeat on the French at Trafalgar (1805) so Napoleon abandoned plans to invade England and turned on the Austro-Russian forces, defeating them at Austerlitz later the same year. He gained much new territory, including annexation of Prussian lands which ostensibly gave him control of Europe. The Holy Roman Empire was dissolved, Holland and Westphalia created, and over the next five years, Napoleon's relatives and loyalists were installed as leaders (in Holland, Westphalia, Italy, Naples, Spain and Sweden).
In 1810, he had his childless marriage to Josephine de Beauharnais annulled and married the daughter of the Austrian emperor in the hope of having an heir. A son, Napoleon, was born a year later.
The Peninsular War began in 1808. Costly French defeats over the next five years drained French military resources. Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812 resulted in a disastrous retreat. The tide started to turn in favour of the allies and in March 1814, Paris fell. Napoleon went into exile on the Mediterranean island of Elba. In March 1815 he escaped and marched on the French capital. The Battle of Waterloo ended his brief second reign. The British imprisoned him on the remote Atlantic island of St Helena, where he died on 5 May 1821.

The Benefits of Apples

Photograph © 2007 Leonore H. Dvorkin

Apples are famously good for us. How often have you heard that "an apple a day keeps the doctor away"? Apples are delightfully crisp and juicy. Many varieties are available year-round. Unlike grapes or ripe bananas, apples stay firm in a backpack or purse, requiring no special protection. An apple makes an ideal after-school snack, requiring no preparation other than a quick wash. Baked into pies or cobblers, apples rank high among comfort foods.
In short, it's hard to find anything negative to say about this justly popular fruit. What may surprise you, as it did me when I was doing the research for this article, is just how many benefits apples offer. The range is truly impressive.
The nutritional standouts in apples are fiber, flavonoids, and fructose. One apple provides up to 5 grams of fiber, more than many cereals. This can help prevent heart disease and constipation. Apples contain virtually no fat. They can help lower harmful LDL cholesterol and raise beneficial HDL cholesterol. Lauren Mathews, my Denver acupuncturist (www.FrontRangeAcupuncture.com), says she has seen patients' cholesterol levels "plummet" after they added a daily apple and a fish-oil capsule to their diets. Fujis and Red Delicious apples have the most effect on cholesterol.
Extensive research has confirmed that flavonoids, a class of antioxidant that is abundant in apples, help prevent heart disease and stroke. The richest sources of flavonoids are apples, tea, onions, and broccoli. To get the most of a flavonoid called quercetin, which can boost memory, be sure to eat the skin of the apple. A flavonoid called phloridzin, which is found only in apples, may help prevent bone loss associated with menopause.
Antioxidant compounds in apple skin called phenols provide UV-B protection, making your skin more resistant to damage from the sun. Braeburn, Fuji, and Red Delicious apples are all high in phenols.
The fructose in apples gives them their sweetness. Fructose is a simple sugar, but it's broken down slowly. Combined with all the fiber in apples, this helps keep blood sugar levels stable.
Dozens of studies in many countries have shown that apples can reduce the risk of developing asthma, several types of cancer, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. They can also increase weight loss and lung function. The tannins in apple juice may help prevent urinary tract infections and gum disease.
The common and popular Red Delicious apple may be one of the healthiest foods on earth. It contains more antioxidants than seven other apple varieties. Jonagolds and Golden Delicious apples contain the most quercetin, the memory booster mentioned above. Granny Smith and Red Delicious apples are particularly good for the skin, fortifying both collagen and elastin. (My husband eats a Granny Smith apple every day. David is 63, but has very youthful-looking skin. Now we know one of the reasons why!)
There is nothing wrong with sticking with one or two favorite types of apples, as they are all good for you. But why not experiment, so as to get the full range of possible benefits? For just a few dollars, you can take home samples of half a dozen different varieties. And those are only a few of the 7,000 varieties of apples on the world market today. Be sure to try apples of all colors: red, green, and yellow. You will discover a remarkable range of flavors, texture, and sweetness.
Some cautions to observe: Apple juice has only about 10% of the phytonutrient ******* of fresh apples, and is higher in sugar. "Cloudy" apple juice is more nutritious than the clear variety. In order to avoid the pesticides that may be in apple skin, buy organic apples if possible. If this is not possible, be sure to wash and rinse the apples thoroughly. To get the most nutrition and fiber from your apples, be sure to eat the skin. Waxes are often applied to apples to protect them during shipping and storage. Carnauba wax, beeswax, and ****lac (from the lac insect) are preferable to petroleum-based waxes, which contain solvent residues. If your apples are waxed, wash them thoroughly in warm soapy water, then rinse well before eating.
Using and storing apples: Of course you can eat apples raw. Many people like apple slices with a little peanut butter on them. Add diced apples to fruit salads and green salads. Sliced apples and cheese are a European favorite for dessert. You can also **** apples, and not just in desserts. Gravenstein, Pippin, and Granny Smith apples retain their texture the best during *****ng. Try braising a chopped apple with red cabbage. To prevent apple slices from browning, simply put them into a bowl of cold water with a spoonful of lemon juice added. To use apple slices in future recipes, freeze them in plastic bags or containers. Whole apples retain a large percentage of their nutritional value for many months if they are stored in the refrigerator.
Try to eat at least three or four apples per week. Some of the healthiest people I know eat one or two apples every day. Now, after all I've learned, I plan to follow their example. To echo what one enthusiastic reader e-mailed me after she had read my articles on tea: "I'm a convert!"

Basic Rules for Successful Investing

You probably know that one of the best ways to grow your wealth is to participate in investing. Investments can be a great way to grow your money, using the power of compound interest in your favor. However, you do need to be careful. There are some basic rules that you should follow if you want to find success with your investing:
Make Sure You Look for Value

It’s important to look for value when investing. It doesn’t mean just buying cheap stocks; you have to make the effort to actually find good value. Look for stocks and other investments that are likely to increase in value over the long haul. You also want to find those that are priced relatively low. Make sure that the investment has solid fundamentals that are likely to survive a market setback.
Don’t Panic and Make Investing Decisions Based on Fear

One of the worst things you can do when investing is to make decisions based on fear. Don’t panic when the market drops. Instead, consider the merits of your investments. Has anything changed fundamentally about the investment? If the only thing that’s different is that the market is struggling, don’t get involved in panic selling and lock in your losses. Make investing decisions based on the merits of the investment, rather than based on fear and following the crowd.
Have a Plan and Be Consistent

You can improve your investment success by creating a viable investment plan and then sticking to it. Be consistent in your investing efforts, and eventually your planning will pay off. Create a plan and stick to it. Don’t let the blips of the short-term market drag you down to make poor decisions. Consider your future and your current situation, and create an investing plan that will help you meet your goals.
Make Sure You are Properly Diversified

Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket. Look at your portfolio and consider how you can diversify. Diversify across sector and asset class, as well as include some foreign investments. Be sure to carefully consider your options, though; it is possible to be too diversified and then reduce the overall effectiveness of your portfolio. Give it some careful thought, and use your investing plan to help guide you. Remember, too, that you will likely need to rebalance occasionally.
Watch Out for Items that will Erode Your Earnings

All investment comes with costs. You have transaction fees to pay, fund fees and other costs. Additionally, you have to consider inflation and taxes in your investment strategy. While you can’t avoid fees, taxes and inflation, you can reduce the impact that they have on your real earnings. Consider what you can do to reduce fees by becoming a DIY investor. Consult with tax professionals to put together a tax plan that can help you reduce your tax liability. Find ways to reduce your exposure to inflation. You will be able to keep more of your own earnings when you are careful about reducing your losses.
