The passive voice

Active sentences focus on performing an action
eg:John wrote the letter

However

Passive sentences focus on receiving an action
eg:The letter was wriiten by John

So,the passive voice is a way of forming sentences so that the focus is on the person or thing receiving the action

The passive voice is formed:be+past participle

Remark:The auxiliary to be is conjucated according to the tense of the verb in the active voice

Well,to make it clear ,I'm going to illustrate with examples

Eg1:John writes the letter
Here,the verb is writes
It's in the present,so we put to be in the present+the past participle of the verb to write
It will be like that :The letter is wriiten by John

Eg2:John wrote the letter
Here,the verb is in the past simple so,we put to be in the past simple +the past participle of the verb
It will be like that:The letter was written by John

Eg3:John is writing the letter
The same thing,the tense is the present continuous so we put to be in the present continuous+the past participle of the verb to write

The letter is being wriiten by John

Eg4:John has written the letter
We have the present perfect,so we put to be in the present perfect+the past participle of the verb
The letter has been written by John

Eg5:John was writing the letter
We have the past continuous so we put to be in the past continuous+the past participle of the verb to write

The letter was being written by John

The same thing with the past perfect
eg6:John had written the letter
The letter had been written by John

Now,I'm going to give you an example with the modal will
eg:the teachers will correct the exams next week
Here we have the future,so we put to be in the future
will+be+past participle
Next week,the exams will be corrected by the teachers

The same thing with can,may,should,must,ought to

In brief,when we want to turn into the passive we have first to know the tense of the verb in the active so as to put the auxiliary to be

it's true but it's better to say:English is taught to us by Mr Smith

Cigarettes ought to be banned from public places

the last one i don't know ^^

Why didn't you put the auxiliary and the past participle with the second sentence
