"I can 't believe we are fighting over this, for goodness sake she's just a friend".
Your mum sat on the blue sofa and stared into nothing. Her face showed no sign that she was even listening to your dad.
Frustrated, your dad walked out of the house, slamming the door on his way out so hard that the baby began to cry. Your mum turned and saw you behind the dining room curtain where you had been hiding before the baby gave you away.
"Bring her".
You handed the baby to her and sat beside her on the floor.
"Mama, will daddy come home tonight?"
"Who knows" She answered. Her eyes glistened and for a moment you thought she would break down and cry, but she didn't. She never cried.
You thought about the boys in school who said your father slept with everything in skirts and that Mrs. Karen's daughter was your step sister. Even though you defended your dad, it was hard not to believe them, especially when the said girl looked exactly like you.
The door bell rang and your mum stood up and went to the door.
"There has been an accident" You heard the late night visitor said. Your mum shut the door behind her and you couldn't hear anymore.
When she came in, her eyes were clear.
"Jaden, your grandmother will come get you, I need to go somewhere now",
The next door neighbour stayed with you bringing with her lots of chocolate and glancing at you with a strange expression. Later you will think about your mother's reaction and wonder if her expression had shown relief or pain when your dad died close to the bridge near Mrs. Karen's house .But for now, your grandmother enters and wraps you in her bear-like arms whispering.
"Je suis desolee mon cherie, Je suis desolee"
