Phrasal Verbs 5

هذه المشاركة تكملة للجزء الاول
و تم فيها وضع افعال لم يتم ذكرها سابقا

1) act up
behave badly: يتصرف بطريقة غير لائقة
Sophie got bored and started acting up


2) add up
to calculate the total of two or more numbers يجمع أو يحسب
If you add those four figures up, it comes to over £500. She added the bill up
I'm not very good at adding up



3) add up to

to become a particular amount يبلغ كمية او حد معين
The various building programmes add up to several thousand new homes


We thought we'd bought lots of food, but it didn't add up to much when we'd spread it out on the table





4) ask sb in
to invite someone to come into a building or room, especially your home يدعو شخص للدخول الى مبنى، غرفة او منزل



I'd ask you in for a coffee but I have to get up early for work in the morning



5) ask after sb UK phrasal verb


to ask for information about someone, especially about their health يستعلم عن شخص ما و خاصة عن صحته


Tell your father I was asking after him


6) ask around

to ask a lot of different people in order to get information or help يسأل الكثير من الاشخاص للحصول على معلومات اولمساعدة

Our babysitter's just moved away, so we're asking around for a replacement



7) back away
to move backwards away from something or someone, usually because you are frightened يرجع الى الخلف بسبب الخوف خاصة
She saw that he had a gun and backed away


8) back down
to admit that you were wrong or that you have been defeated يعترف بالخطأ او الهزيمة
Eventually, Roberto backed down and apologized
Local residents have forced the local council to back down from/on its plans to build a nightclub in their street


9) back off
to stop being involved in a situation, usually in order to allow other people to deal with it themselves ينسحب او يتوقف عن
She started to criticize me, then she suddenly backed off
Just back off and let us do this on our own, will you?


10) back off
to move backwards away from someone, usually because you are frightened يرجع الى الخلف بسبب الخوف خاصة
I saw the knife and backed off


11) back onto sth
faces something from the back يقابل و لكن من الجهة الخلفية و ليس الامامية
The house backs onto a narrow alley


12) back out
to decide not to do something that you had said you would do يقرر عدم القيام بعمل قال مسبقا انه سيقوم به
You agreed to come. You can't back out now
They backed out of the deal the day before they were due to sign the contract


13) back sb up
to support or help someone يدعم او يساعد
My family backed me up throughout the court case


14) back sth up
to prove something is true يثبت صحة شيء ما
His claims are backed up by recent research


15) bawl sb out

to tell someone angrily that something they have done is wrong ينتقد
He's always bawling out people in meetings


16) bear down on sb/sth
to move in a threatening way towards someone or something يتحرك باتجاه شخص او شيء مشكلاً خطر
I looked up to see the car bearing down on me, out of control


17) bear on sth
to be connected or related to يكون ذو صلة او علاقة
I don't see how that information bears on this case


18) bear sb/sth out
to support the truth of something يدعم صحة شيء
His version of events just isn't borne out by the facts
If you tell them what happened I will bear you out


19) bear with sb
to be patient and wait while someone does something يصبر على الشخص حتى ينجز عمله
If you'll just bear with me for a moment, I'll find you a copy of the drawings


20) beat sth/sb back
use force to move someone or something dangerous away from you يدفع بقوة لإبعاد شخص او شيء خطير عنه
Riot police beat back the crowds of demonstrators


21) beat down
sun) shines very strongly and makes the air very hot) تشع بقوة و تجعل الهواء حارا
The tropical sun beat down on them mercilessly


22) beat sb down
to persuade someone to accept a lower amount of money for something يقنع شخص بقبول كمية اقل من المال ثمن شيء
He wanted £50 for the bike, but I managed to beat him down to £35


23) beat sb off
to manage to defeat someone who is attacking you تتغلب على شخص يقوم بمهاجمتك
She beat off her attacker by hitting him with her handbag


24) beat sb out
to defeat يهزم
They beat out several other rivals for the contract


25) beat sth out of sb
to make someone say things they do not want to by hitting يرغم شخص على قول اشياء من خلال الضرب
The men claimed that the police had beaten the confession out of them


26) beat sb up
to hurt someone badly by hitting or kicking them again and again يؤذي عن طريق الضرب المتكرر
He claims he was beaten up by the police


27) beat sb to it
to do something before someone else does يسبق في القيام بعمل قبل شخص آخر
I was just going to tidy up the kitchen, but you've beaten me to it


28) blow sb away
to surprise or please يفاجئ او يرضي
The ending will blow you away


29) blow sb/sth away
to defeat someone or something completely يهزم شخص او شيء كليا
They blew the other team away in the second half of the game

to treat something or someone as if they are not important يعامل شخص او شيء بعدم اهمية
Just blow off his comments, he's only joking


31) blow over - SITUATION
becomes gradually less important until it ends and is forgotten يقل اهمية و ينتهي ثم يُنسى
I thought that after a few days the argument would blow over

quickly understand something or deal with it so that it does not cause problems for you يفهم الموقف سريعا و يتعامل معه بطريقة لا تسبب له المشاكل لاحقا
