If you want to write a piece of poem in English, pay attention to this:
The line of the English poem constitutes of a meter. The meter constitutes of feet.
There are five kinds of feet:
1-iambic:It is an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable.
2-trocaic: It is a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed one.
3-dactylic: two unstressed syllables followed by a stressed one.
4-anapaestic:a stressed syllable followed by two unstressed ones.
5-spondaic:a stressed syllable followed by another stressed one.
If the line contains one foot,we call it "monometer"
two feet,we call it dimeter
three feet,we call it trimeter
four feet,we call it tetrameter
five feet,we call it pentameter
six feet,we call it hexameter
example:
Your force to break, blow, burn and make me new
"your" is unstressed,"force" is stressed "to is unstressed,"break","blow" and "burn" are stressed, and" is unstressed,"make" is stressed,"me" is unstressed,"new" is stressed.
If we consider this symbol * for unstressed and this symbol / for stressed,we get something like this:
/* /* // /* /*
So,we have four iambic and one spondaic which shows that the dominant foot is iambic. So,we call this meter"iambic pentameter".
P.S : If you find two unstressed syllables ** consider the foot iambic.
